Scala Digital Signage Helps BI Norwegian School of Management Communicate with Campus Audiences

scala-logo-1-31-07-smallNewswireToday has posted a very interesting article about digital signage in education:
NewswireToday – /newswire/ – Oslo, Norway, 08/17/2009 – The BI Norwegian School of Management, one of Europe’s largest business schools, has launched a digital signage network spanning all five of its campuses.

Working with Scala and YIT Building Systems, a Scala Certified Partner based in Oslo, the school installed a 38-screen network that broadcasts important news and information to students, staff and visiting campus groups.

The Oslo campus features 25 of the screens, seven of which are controlled by student organizations. The screens display different content at individual locations across the campuses, including:

• Entrance areas: Messages welcoming visitors to BI and showing daily information;

• High-traffic areas: Where students and crowds tend to gather, the network displays national and global news, financial information, weather, BI-specific news, exam information, and notices about special lectures, job vacancies, activities and important IT information;

• Library: Screens inform visitors of operating hours, new materials and information about training classes;

• IT Department: Screens at the Helpdesk alert viewers about training classes;

• Student Administration: Select screens display important student information, including details about exams, deadlines and office hours.

BI already has received positive feedback about the digital displays. After using the network to communicate information about its “Career and Recruiting Service” campaign, BI measured a dramatic increase in the number of students who registered via specific Web sites and jobs for which they applied.

“We are really satisfied with Scala Content Manager’s ability to handle different types of content like pictures, messages and videos,” said Stein-Oddvar Evensen, Communication Consultant at BI. “Now that we’ve used Scala for a while, we feel our experience within digital communications has grown tremendously. We are currently looking into new ways to automate the content, which will allow us more time to produce better information campaigns with clearer messages and dynamic effects.”

Scala Powers Indiana University’s Campus-wide Digital Signage Network

scala-logo-1-31-07-smallFrom PR Web comes the news about Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and its over 30 channels of individualized content all over campus:

Using Scala software on the university network, Indiana University Auxiliary IT now has the ability to drive more than 30 channels of individualized content to numerous screens all across campus

Bloomington, IN (PRWEB) July 21, 2009 — The number of digital signage deployments on university campuses in the U.S. has skyrocketed during the past few years. Earlier this year, Indiana University (IU) Bloomington joined the fray when it launched a campus-wide digital network to more quickly broadcast important news and information to students and staff.

With the aid of Digital AV, a Scala Certified Partner based in Fort Wayne, Ind., IU’s Auxiliary IT group installed 30 40-inch LCD monitors and computers powered by Scala digital signage software. The complete installation took less than one year to accomplish, and the network was fully operational in spring 2009.

“Digital media is not only modern and eye-catching to students, but it’s less of a hassle than printed materials,” said Aaron Sudduth, Senior System Administrator of IU’s Auxiliary IT Services. “It’s evident that the marketing departments have been able to reduce the cost of printing, and the real return has been on getting information to students and staff much faster.”

Users can access a Web-based template that can be used by any authorized Web browser to input the content into a Microsoft SQL database. This ability to remotely access the system brings great functionality to the system and is one of the most powerful components built into Scala Content Manager.

Using Scala software on the university network, IU Auxiliary IT now has the ability to drive more than 30 channels of individualized content to numerous screens all across campus. Currently, LCD monitors are located in all 12 campus dormitories, food service areas, parking operations and the IU Memorial Union Building. Additionally, one digital signage channel is tied directly to the TV cable network within the Memorial Union hotel to display meeting announcements and other upcoming events in each meeting room.

Moving forward, Auxiliary IT would like to integrate digital signage with IU’s emergency alert system, which is currently set up to send emergency text and e-mail messages to students on the go. Additionally, IU plans to investigate ways to harness this technology as a digital way-finding system for the Student Union.

British Columbia Children’s Hospital Foundation Uses Digital Signage for Campaign Fund-raising

scala-logo-1-31-07-smallFrom PRWeb.com comes this extremely interesting post about an Interactive donor wall powered by Scala and 2C Visual Communications’ diVA™:

Vancouver, British Columbia (PRWEB) July 7, 2009 — The British Columbia Children’s Hospital Foundation (BCCHF) is harnessing the power of digital signage to spread the word about its Campaign for BC Children, a $200-million initiative to build a new hospital and create a legacy for the province’s children.

Using Scala Content Manager and Player, and 2C Visual Communications’ diVA™ — an interactive software and hardware system that creates a responsive environment — the BCCHF Donor Relations team constructed a 10-foot by 15-foot interactive mural in the lobby of BC Children’s Hospital. It features four LCD screens, four audio speakers, two motion sensors, four distance sensors and lighting effects. When a passerby enters the area immediately surrounding the mural, sensors detect movement and bring the mural to life with video, audio and lights.

We wanted to do something outside the box and use technology, so we developed the idea of an interactive donor wall. It adds an element of fun to the lobby.
“We had a temporary space in the hospital that we could use for keeping the public and hospital staff up to date on the Campaign for BC Children,” said Debra Kerr, Donor Relations Coordinator at BCCHF. “We wanted to do something outside the box and use technology, so we developed the idea of an interactive donor wall. It adds an element of fun to the lobby.”

According to Chris Sweeting, the Web and Technical Support Specialist at BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, the BCCHF Donor Relations team updates the donor wall regularly. Once the team determines what new material to include, content updates only take 10 to 15 minutes to upload into the network using Scala Content Manager and Player software.

Originally launched in April 2008, the interactive donor wall continues to educate the public about the campaign, encourages donations, profiles key donors, and keeps everyone up to date on the progress of new hospital construction and campaign proceeds.

Peabody-Essex Art Museum Sports New Scala InfoChannel Digital Signage

scala-logo-1-31-07-smallFrom the Digital Signage Expo website, we read about the new Scala InfoChannel visual messaging solution, and how, thanks to Scala, the Peabody-Essex art gallery’s information system can change faster than any other museum in the world.

Art Museum Expands With 21st Century Displays
Extensive Digital Sign Network Updated From Central Control Room

SALEM, MA – Before the Big Dig engineering marvel was finished in December, Boston went through another major transformation… but of culture, not transportation. After a huge three-year expansion, the Peabody-Essex in Massachusetts is now one of the 25 largest art museums in the nation. The suite of new galleries dedicated to changing exhibitions is among the largest on the East Coast… and now sporting a new Scala InfoChannel visual messaging solution, the gallery’s information system can change faster than any other museum in the world.

InfoChannel has alleviated the need to replace constantly changing posters or videotapes. Now curators can show a wealth of information through scheduled multimedia playback on a low-profile screen instead of having to plaster walls with a bulletin board or worry about replacing degrading or outdated VCR cassettes.

The information display system shows content from Scala’s InfoChannel Player 3, a networked solution that can be updated remotely and run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Content is changed by periodic or exact schedule, so the museum can easily adjust to the expected audience depending on the season or even the time of day.

The main admissions desk signage includes a high-resolution 42″ plasma screen that shows information about the latest museum exhibits. The ticket counter is the perfect place to educate new visitors about ongoing exhibits as well as daily events, and it can all be continuously updated behind the cashier without interrupting customers or his workday.

Additional infrastructure for adding other displays in the network is located throughout the museum, such as the small orientation theater next to the Yin Yu Tang Chinese exhibit. Visitors can view a video on a 60″ plasma display panel, complete with a theater sound system. Several other exhibits such as the Idea Studio have large flat panel monitors, too.

The screens can all be tied into the same Scala electronic signage system and administered centrally by InfoChannel Network Manager 3 in the museum’s control room. Creative work and textual updates are also conceived in the same room via Scala’s InfoChannel Designer 3. When published, changes can either be seen instantly or scheduled to appear later throughout the building.

The high-resolution images are transmitted over standard CAT5 cable using special Extron CAT5 transmitters and receivers. The changing exhibits area was designed with the future in mind for transmitting computer graphics, video and audio to produce a truly interactive exhibit space.

As the oldest continuously operating museum in America, it has held countless historical objects since opening in 1799. Now, the remodeled Peabody-Essex is a prime example of cutting edge technology helping curators to stay modern and work efficiently in a traditional setting.

Scala Partner New Vision Media Implements Signage in the Kursky Rail Terminal

scala-logo-1-31-07-smallPRWeb.com has posted a press release informing us that Scala partner New Vision Media has implemented “the first multi-screen digital passenger information and way-finding system in the Kursky Rail Terminal, Moscow’s largest terminal by passenger volume.”

Here is the press release:

Passenger Information and Way-Finding at Moscow Train Terminal Finally Sheds its Industrial Past

From metal to microcomputer: Kursky Rail Terminal modernizes its message

Moscow (PRWEB) April 22, 2009 — Scala, the leading provider of end-to-end digital signage and advertising management software, announced that New Vision Media, a Scala Certified Partner in Russia, has implemented the first multi-screen digital passenger information and way-finding system in the Kursky Rail Terminal, Moscow’s largest terminal by passenger volume.

Built in 1896 during the reign of Nikolai Romanov, Russia’s last emperor, Kursky Rail Terminal’s passenger information system remained stuck in the nineteenth century. Until New Vision Media approached the owners to modernize the station’s signage in 2008, it had four large boards communicating passenger information throughout concourses. The boards used magnetic metal letters that required three staff members to manually update content each night. They had to align letters by hand with great precision, but inaccuracies and spelling errors were common, and the boards were also difficult to read.

This process limited the amount of information available to passengers because it was not updated in real time. It was also costly to employ staff to update boards nightly.

New Vision Media identified contemporary digital signage technologies as a solution for reducing labor costs and providing additional communication benefits to the station and its operators. The operators backed the proposition based on their need to enhance the information offered to passengers, lower operational costs and reinforce a modern image and approach courtesy of the network’s deployment, a first in a train terminal in Russia.

New Vision Media worked closely with terminal administrators to specify and install screens across the site, with the largest comprising five large-format video walls of multiple 40″ LCD panels. The panels are suspended more than 65 feet (20 meters) high to provide concourse-wide visual impact. The implementation alone required a significant amount of design and development work in terms of construction, refurbishment and installation and, where possible, site impact has been mitigated by delivering content wirelessly.

These screens display schedules for long distance and domestic trains in real time next to additional information, such as local news, weather, general travel information, and Euro and Dollar exchange rates. This information is generated by New Vision Media from online sources (RSS feeds) and fed to the screens’ branded templates created in Scala. Unlike the original design, this solution is more automated.

The network is capable of broadcasting advertising messages from third parties and, in the future, advertisers may have the opportunity to target passengers in the terminal.

As part of its full-service offering, New Vision Media uses Scala Designer to create a range of animated templates that allow images, text, movies and feeds to be composed quickly and effectively. Size, layout and assets are pre-configured to ensure each item is consistent with the brand guidelines and visual requirements of the station, providing few opportunities for misspelled words or missing letters. Once completed, these templates are scheduled and remotely broadcast to the network using Scala, via New Vision Media’s network operations center in Moscow.

Anecdotal customer research conducted suggests that passengers are highly satisfied. They cite that the screens offer more helpful, relevant and appropriate content than before in terms of assisting them on their travel, helping them navigate the terminal efficiently, and providing added-value content (news, weather, etc.) in a format that is easy to see and read.

Likewise, the administrative owners of Kursky Rail Terminal are pleased that phase one of this unique development has proved effective. Working with New Vision Media, they are likely to look at developing further products and services using the screen network in the coming months.

“As a first of its kind project in Russia, we are delighted that we have been able to take an antiquated information system and bring it up to date. In doing so, we are offering passengers a much more dynamic and proactive information system more akin in style to other media they consume elsewhere. The provision of real-time information has been a big hit with passengers as it directly helps them in planning their journey and also with our clients who, through this project, have experienced considerable cost savings over the previous system,” said Vitaly Korol, Managing Director, New Vision Media.

Adding to Korol’s comment, Oscar Elizaga, VP Operations for Scala EMEA said, “In some countries we have become familiar with the digitization of information and way-finding systems. New Vision Media’s experience with Kursky Rail Terminal reflects today’s cutting-edge mindset with regard to large-scale screen and content deployment at rail terminals. Not only is it an excellent example of its kind, it is to be applauded given it is the first of its kind in Russia. I look forward to working with New Vision Media in the coming months to capitalize on this experience and develop our offering to the Russian transport sector.”

Viking Line Takes Scala Digital Signage On Board

From PRWeb comes this press release about Scala Digital Signage and Viking Line: scala-logo-1-31-07-small Scala-powered screens used on ferries to inform passengers and promote tax-free shopping

Mariehamn, Finland (PRWEB) March 31, 2009 — Viking Line, a Finnish operator of ferries and cruise ferries, has partnered with digital signage software provider Scala to implement digital signs on board its seven vessels. The digital signage features both informational and ad-based programming, and reaches passengers at various points on its ships.

The ad-based network shows tax-free promotions in the most trafficked areas of the boat near the shops, restaurant and casinos. The information network shows content on large touch screens, including opening hours, restaurant menus, weather, news, entertainment programming, conference information and possible delays.

Viking Line started to look into digital signage for two main reasons. It was printing about 2,000 sheets of paper every day for the cruise program, and screens that could show this information would reduce printing costs dramatically. Viking Line also wanted to use digital and dynamic posters to increase tax-free sales. It felt a digital network would also raise the professional profile and brand image of the ferries.

Viking Line was looking for a supplier with experience. It wanted an established software solution that had been thoroughly tested and developed over time. Viking also needed a system that could grow with its business and handle new areas of usage in the future.

Scala was first chosen to do a pilot in one of its ferries, Mariella. When Viking Line saw that Scala could meet all of its requirements, it chose Scala for all seven ferries. Currently, Mariella runs 15 screens and six channels. By Summer 2009, all of its ferries will have digital signage networks installed.

“Viking Line is impressed with the potential in the software, and so far we have not discovered any limitations. We are very satisfied with the user interface, and I also want to emphasize the latest Photoshop plug-in that has been added to convert Photoshop-layered elements to Scala script,” said Kenneth Kronström, Technical Project Manager of Viking Line.

Viking Line has reduced its printing costs dramatically, and the company now feels much more environmentally friendly.

“Sales of promotional products have increased remarkably since the screens were installed. We clearly see that the customers perceive the message, and they more frequently purchase the promoted products,” said René Engman, Viking Line’s Deputy Director of IT.

Viking Line has already started to think about new digital signage projects. Its next plan is installing screens at the terminals. This is an area where people are typically waiting and would be receptive to information such as the cruise program and promotional products.

Viking Line also wants to develop a new script together with Scala that could show passengers exactly where the boat is at sea. A screen with a sea map and coordinates showing the boat’s position would be continuously updated along the trip.
